My three favorite holiday songs:
Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Dean Martin—This conversational duet is a wonderfully romantic and suggestive song recorded in a time when love was hidden behind closed doors. It tells of a young couple tempted by their circumstances and each other to embrace their relationship. I think most people can relate to the push and pull of giving into love. This song has the makings of a great book and always leaves me smiling. I love Dean Martin and the Rat Pack.
Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt—This is my fun song. I’ve loved it ever since my dad sang it for me when I was little. He did mix it up by inserting my Christmas wish into the lyrics. Whenever I listen to it now, I still hear his voice. It helps keep him close.
Ave Maria—I love this hymn for its beautiful lyrics and soothing instrumental. It has a lulling quality that makes me want to close my eyes and sing along, usually badly. As much as I love music, I can’t sing but the holiday season gives me an excuse to let my inner rock star out. No matter how awful my renditions are, this time of year is about family. Singing while baking cookies or decorating is my favorite tradition.
